Hầu hết các giai đoạn trong chu trình sống của công trình xây dựng đều cần đến năng lượng. Bởi vậy, trong bối cảnh hiện nay, tiết kiệm năng lượng trong xây dựng cần được tính đến ở mọi giai đoạn xây dựng và sử dụng công trình. Theo số liệu của các nước phát triển, tổng năng lượng tiêu thụ cho các công trình xây dựng chiếm đến 40% - 70% tổng năng lượng cung cấp cho đô thị. Bởi vì, từ thiết kế, thi công, khai thác sử dụng công trình đến sản xuất vật liệu xây dựng đều phải tiêu thụ năng lượng [3].
