Theo định hướng Chương trình (CT) giáo dục phổ thông, dạy học nói chung và dạy học môn Toán nói riêng ở nhà trường THCS hiện nay không cho phép người giáo viên (GV) dạy học theo lối truyền thụ kiến thức một chiều, mà điều quan trọng là người GV phải biết dạy học học sinh (HS) các phương pháp tự học, tự nghiên cứu, qua đó hình thành và phát triển năng lực (NL) cho người học. Muốn như vậy, GV phải hình thành động cơ học tập, kích thích NL phù hợp với từng đối tượng người học. Nhằm phục vụ tốt hoạt động dạy học của GV, SGV phải đảm bảo được những yêu cầu về chức năng, về cấu trúc và hình thức thể hiện nội dung theo quan điểm đổi mới phương pháp dạy học (PPDH) theo định hướng phát triển NL, không chỉ chú ý tích cực hóa về hoạt động trí tuệ mà còn chú ý rèn luyện NL giải quyết vấn đề gắn với những tình huống trong cuộc sống và nghề nghiệp, gắn hoạt động trí tuệ với hoạt động thực hành, thực tiễn. SGV chú trọng tăng cường PPDH nhóm, dạy học khám phá, dạy học phát hiện và giải quyết vấn đề hướng tới đổi mới quan hệ giữa GV – HS. Bên cạnh dạy học những tri thức và kỹ năng riêng lẻ của các môn học chuyên môn, SGV cũng cần bổ sung thêm các chủ đề học tập phức hợp nhằm phát triển NL giải quyết các vấn đề phức hợp.
