Ngày 3/3, Tổ chức Y tế thế giới (WHO) công bố số liệu chính thức cho biết tại châu Mỹ có 2.765 người đã được xác nhận nhiễm virus Zika, chủ yếu tại Mỹ Latinh, trong khi số người bị nghi ngờ nhiễm virus này là 134.000 trường hợp.

Theo phóng viên tại Mỹ Latinh, WHO cũng cảnh báo rằng số người nhiễm loại virus do muỗi Aedes aegypty truyền này trong thực tế còn cao hơn rất nhiều do có tới 80% người nhiễm virus không có triệu chứng hoặc nếu có thì họ cũng không tới các cơ sở y tế.

WHO nhấn mạnh tại thời điểm này, điều quan trong nhất là xác định rõ Zika có liên hệ hay không tới chứng teo não, các dị tật bẩm sinh khác hay hội chứng Guillain-Barré (chứng rối loạn thần kinh ngoại biên).

Hiện tại, virus Zika đã có mặt tại hơn 30 quốc gia châu Mỹ, nhưng chỉ có Brazil và quần đảo Polynésie thuộc Pháp thông báo có trường hợp teo não liên quan tới Zika.
