Tập đoàn FPT hiện là tập đoàn Công nghệ thông tin (CNTT) lớn nhất Việt Nam. Tập đoàn FPT bao gồm 83 công ty thành viên và các chi nhánh hoạt động trong tất cả các lĩnh vực CNTT và truyền thông với gần 15.000 nhân viên . Đặc biệt hiện nay FPT đã có các công ty đặt ở Mỹ, Nhật, Pháp, Singa­pore, Australia và Malaysia. Năm 2008, toàn tập đoàn đã đạt doanh số hơn 21.000 tỷ đồng. Trong 3 năm tới, số nhân viên của FPT sẽ tăng thêm 10.000 người và doanh số sẽ vượt trên 42 nghìn tỷ đồng FPT hiện là đối tác của hơn 200 tập đoàn công nghệ lớn nhẩt trên toàn cầu như Microsoft, IBM, Hitachi, ...
Trường được thành lập vào tháng 9 năm 2006 theo Quyết định số 208/2006/QĐ-TTg của Chính phủ, được Tập đoàn FPT đầu tư 100% vốn, trở thành trường đại học đầu tiên do một doanh nghiệp thành lập tại Việt Nam.

Hiện nay, Trường có 15,000 sinh viên các hệ đào tạo, trong đó riêng sinh viên khối đại học là hơn 6,000. Trường ĐH FPT hiện đang phối hợp với Bộ GD&ĐT chủ trì cuộc thi cấp Quốc gia giải Toán qua Internet - ViOlympic.
