Khái niệm Cloud Computing (Điện toán đám mây) được định nghĩa bởi Viện Tiêu chuẩn và Công nghệ Mỹ (NIST – National Institute of Standards & Technology ) như sau:

"Cloud Computing là mô hình dịch vụ cho phép người dùng truy cập tài nguyên điện toán dùng chung (mạng, server, lưu trữ, ứng dụng, dịch vụ) thông qua kết nối mạng, một cách dễ dàng, mọi lúc mọi nơi, theo yêu cầu. Tài nguyên điện toán này có thể được thiết lập hoặc hủy bỏ nhanh chóng bởi người dùng mà không cần sự can thiệp của Nhà cung cấp dịch vụ".
Đặc điểm dịch vụ Cloud Computing

Dịch vụ Cloud Computing thực thụ phải có 5 đặc điểm sau:

Truy cập tài nguyên điện toán qua kết nối mạng băng rộng
Người dùng tự cấu hình dịch vụ theo yêu cầu (on-demand self service)
Tài nguyên được dùng chung bởi nhiều người dùng một cách tối ưu
Việc sử dụng tài nguyên được đo đếm (gần) theo thời gian thực
Tài nguyên có thể tăng/giảm nhanh chóng mà không cần sự hỗ trợ của nhà cung cấp dịch vụ
