Trong quần thể kiến trúc lúc ban đầu của chùa Đông Đại có hai tòa nhà cao 100 mét. Vào thời điểm ấy, sau những tòa tháp ở Ai Cập thì đây là hai tòa nhà cao nhất thế giới. Hiện nay thì hai tòa nhà này không còn nữa. Tòa nhà trong hiện tại được trùng tu hoàn thành vào năm 1709 và nhỏ hơn 30% so với tòa nhà trước đó.

Ngôi chùa Todaiji cổng tam quan của chùa Đông Đại (Nandaimon – Nam Đại Môn) được xây dựng từ năm 1199 cũng là một trong những công trình kiến trúc vĩ đại của chùa.
