Chưa đầy 5 tháng sau khi giới thiệu E-Class hoàn toàn mới, Mercedes-Benz đã cho ra mắt biến thể mui sau kéo dài (station wagon) của dòng xe hạng trung này với tên gọi E-Class Estate 2017. Đây là cột mốc đặc biệt của Mercedes-Benz bởi đúng 50 năm trước, vào năm 1966 hãng đã trình làng mẫu xe tiền thân của E-Class Estate với tên gọi Universal.
Mục đích của Mercedes-Benz khi phát triển E-Class Estate đó là mang đến một mẫu xe sang trọng, thoải mái như E-Class Sedan nhưng lại có khả năng phục vụ những hành trình dài nhờ phần mui mở rộng về phía sau. Điều này không chỉ làm tăng đáng kể không gian cho hàng ghế sau mà còn mang đến một khoang hành lý cực rộng. Cụ thể, E-Class Estate 2017 có dung tích khoang hành lý 670 lít và nếu gập hàng ghế sau thì sẽ đạt mức 1.820 lít. So với thế hệ cũ thì dung tích khoang hành lý của E-Class Estate 2017 giảm 25 lít và tăng 135 lít khi gập hàng ghế sau.
Tuy nhiên, hàng ghế sau của xe vẫn có thể gập lưng ghế 10 độ về phía trước để tăng thêm 30 lít dung tích khoang hành lý trong khi vẫn đủ chỗ cho 5 người ngồi.
