Chúng ta biết đến môn kinh tế học là một môn nghiên cứu những lựa chọn của cá nhân và xã hội về cách thức sử dụng các nguồn tài nguyên có giới hạn. Kinh tế học nghiên cứu các hiện tượng kinh tế trên hai góc độ : Một là góc độ bộ phận gia đình, hai là góc độ toàn bộ nền kinh tế. Cách tiếp cận thứ hai đã dẫn tới việc hình thành môn kinh tế vĩ mô. Như vậy có thể xác định dối tượng nghiên cứu của kinh tế vĩ mô là nền kinh tế và sự hoạt động của nền kinh tế. Nhiệm vụ của nó là phối hợp với các môn khoa học khác của khoa học kinh tế giúp cho người học hiểu được sự hoạt động của nền kinh tế, xác định được các vấn đề của nền kinh tế trong mỗi giai đoạn, hiểu được nguyên nhân và hậu quả của mỗi vấn đề, đề xuất được giải pháp cho mỗi vấn đề đó.
