Từ thuở nhỏ, Bảo Đại đã được cha mì

Từ thuở nhỏ, Bảo Đại đã được cha mình là Vua Khải Định đưa sang Pháp sinh sống và học tập nên ông chịu ảnh hưởng rất lớn bởi nền giáo dục và văn hóa phương Tây. Do vậy, sau khi được cha truyền ngôi, Bảo Đại chấp nhận sự “bảo hộ” của nước Pháp, coi Pháp là “bảo mẫu”, ông cũng là người được nước Pháp nuôi và trả lương.
Từ khi Bảo Đại lên nắm quyền, nước ta hoàn toàn phụ thuộc vào Pháp về mọi mặt, Bảo Đại chỉ còn mang tính chất nhà vua tượng trưng cho một nước, hầu hết mọi công việc quan trọng đều do người Pháp quyết định.
Sau khi thực dân Pháp quay trở lại xâm lược nước ta lần thứ hai, Bảo Đại lại được người Pháp mời về làm Quốc trưởng. Thấy được vận mệnh của đất nước đang lâm nguy dưới tay Quốc trưởng Bảo Đại, năm 1952, nhân dịp sinh nhật lần thứ 40 của Quốc trưởng, những sinh viên có tấm lòng yêu nước của Việt Nam đang học tập tại Pháp đã cùng nhau đặt thợ làm một bản đồ bằng bạc gửi về Việt Nam tặng Bảo Đại.
Bản đồ được “vẽ” rất công phu, tỉ mỉ, chất liệu hoàn toàn bằng bạc được đặt trong một khung gỗ chắc chắn. Những chỗ có địa hình núi cao như Trung du miền núi phía Bắc, mạn phía Tây nơi có đường biên giới giáp với Lào và Campuchia được dát bạc dày và cao hơn những khu vực đồng bằng. Riêng ở vùng đồng bằng châu thổ sông Hồng, đồng bằng sông Cửu Long là nơi chuyên canh tác cây lúa có biểu tượng người đang cấy, con trâu đi bừa.
Những vùng trồng nhiều dừa như Bình Định, Phú Yên, Bến Tre được khảm bạc hình hai cây dừa song song. Tấm bản đồ là những đường nét hết sức tỉ mỉ, cầu kỳ với đầy đủ biểu tượng của mọi vùng miền trên đất nước ta đã tạo thành một bức tranh sống động, rất ấn tượng.
