Đây là một hiện tượng virus khá nguy hiểm đang lây lan rất nhanh và mạnh trong tâm lý của cộng đồng giới trẻ Thế giới, trong đó có cả Việt Nam. FOMO phổ biến nhất ở người tuổi từ 18 đến 33, hai phần ba số người trong nhóm tuổi này cho biết họ cảm thấy nỗi sợ hãi bị bỏ lỡ/ sợ bị lãng quên. Một cuộc khảo sát cũng cho thấy, FOMO phổ biến ở nam giới hơn phụ nữ mặc dù lý do vẫn chưa rõ ràng.
