Số AT có rất nhiều lợi điểm : Khó bị chết máy, khởi động giữa dốc dễ dàng , vận chuyển êm ái, xe chạy ít bị giật. Vì các tiện ích như vậy nên hiện nay ở Bắc Mỹ lượng xe con xuất xưởng có số AT chiếm đến 80% , và số AT cũng đã được lắp trên rất nhiều dòng xe tải hiện đại . Ở thị trường Việt Nam chúng ta cũng thấy ngày càng nhiều xe có số AT xuất hiện, tuy rằng giá mua xe có đắt hơn chút ít nhưng bù lại người lái được thoải mái dễ dàng hơn khi điều khiển xe.

D: Drive, số tiến, vị trí thường xuyên nhất khi vận hành xe, tùy theo tốc độ mà số tiến sẽ tự động lựa chọn số cao hay thấp sao cho phù hợp nhất.

M: Manual ( + – ) vị trí phía bên phải số D, vận hành như số thường, cho phép xe chuyển sang số 1, 2, 3, 4, thường để tạo đà tăng tốc vượt xe khác hoặc khi xuống dốc, đổ đèo.

OD –Overdrive, số vượt tốc dùng như số D
