Khi tôi ngồi trên xe bus ra sân bay Penang để đến Langkawi, tôi nghĩ nhất định sẽ trở lại Penang...

Cũng có thể bởi tôi vẫn chưa nếm trọn những món ăn đường phố Penang, đạp xe chưa đủ xa ra ngoài thành cổ. Một chút tiếc nuối đọng lại vì tấm vé hành trình đã đặt. Ai cũng hỏi tại sao tôi không đi tàu biển từ Penang sang Langkawi mà lại chọn máy bay.

Tôi không biết, có thể vì tôi sợ cảm giác chông chênh trên vùng biển chẳng yên bình suốt 3 giờ đồng hồ. Có thể tôi biết, mình sẽ còn đi một hành trình dài trên những chuyến tàu biển rồi cuối cùng mới về nhà... Chuyến bay từ Penang sang Langkawi chưa đầy 25 phút là chuyến bay ngắn nhất tôi từng đi.

Người ta nói về viên ngọc Langkawi của bang Kedah quá nhiều, sự huyễn hoặc làm tôi tưởng tượng ra một hòn đảo lung linh dưới nắng mặt trời chiều ấy là chốn thiên đường tuyệt trần. Nhưng có thể nó chỉ là chốn thiên đường với dân nghiền mua sắm, bởi mọi thứ ở Langkawi đều miễn thuế.

Ở Langkawi tôi bắt gặp cuộc sống phóng khoáng của các thanh niên Malaysia, một hòn đảo của giới nhà giàu, nơi mà họ có thể tự do lái siêu xe dọc ngang, tiêu tiền thoải mái trong các trung tâm thương mại, ăn uống trong các nhà hàng hải sản đắt tiền.

Đến Langkawi, tôi không ngại ngần vào siêu thị xách một túi toàn bia hảo hạng, thứ xa xỉ bậc nhất ở Malaysia, mà trong suốt hành trình từ Singapore sang đất này, tôi không một lần dám móc hầu bao.

Những đêm ở trong căn phòng gỗ nhìn ra vườn trên đảo là những đêm tôi ngủ ngon giấc nhất. Tôi không phải lo nghĩ ngày mai mình sẽ bắt xe bus nào để di chuyển, giờ giấc ra sao, tham quan những đâu. Tôi định dành cho Langkawi những ngày bình yên tắm biển, nghỉ ngơi trước khi bước chân tiếp sang đất Thái Lan. Langkawi là quần đảo gồm 99 hòn đảo, cách đất liền 30km nhưng lại sát với biên giới Thái Lan.

Tôi đã mơ về những bãi biển dài có cát trắng tinh, nhưng thứ tôi nhận được ở Penang là những hòn đảo đá, hiếm cát, không bãi tắm, rất nhiều khỉ, đại bàng, sóc. Chúng ở khắp mọi nơi, trong khách sạn, ngoài bờ biển, các đảo du lịch. Thú vị là bạn có thể nhìn thấy biển cảnh báo “Không cho khỉ ăn, đừng làm hư chúng” ở khắp mọi nơi trên đảo.

Tên gọi Langkawi là kết hợp của hai từ: "Lang" và "Kawi". "Lang" là từ gốc tiếng Malaysia, trong từ helang, nghĩa là đại bàng. Trong quá khứ, quần đảo này là nơi cư ngụ của vô số đại bàng. Ngày nay, vẫn còn một số đảo có nhiều đại bàng và là điểm đến ưa thích của du khách.

Học giả Tun Mohamed Zahir trong cuốn sách Những huyền thoại của Langkawi (The Legends of Langkawi) lại cho rằng tên Langkawi có gốc từ tiếng Ấn Độ cổ Sanskrit; trong đó "langka" là đẹp và "wi" là vô cùng.

Tôi thấy quần đảo này có nét gì đó tương đồng với Vịnh Hạ Long ở Việt Nam, ở cảnh sắc, kiến tạo địa chất cũng như văn hóa. Điều khác biệt của Langkawi có lẽ chính là từng đàn đại bàng đỏ nâu, đen tuyền sà xuống sông nhặt cá và mực do du khách ném ra.

Lịch sử của hòn đảo gắn với tên tuổi của một người phụ nữ đã bị xử tử oan vì bị nghi phạm tội ngoại tình, đó là Mahsuri. Theo lời nguyền của Mahsuri, liên tiếp trong bảy thế hệ, hòn đảo này luôn có chiến tranh, xung đột. Những cuộc chiến qua đi, đảo trở lại yên bình dưới thời của Sultanate của Kedah. Khách du lịch chủ yếu là khách nội địa, Trung Quốc, các nước Hồi giáo. Văn hóa đạo Hồi khiến cho những bãi biển của Langkawi lặng lẽ hơn, ngay cả khi đêm xuống. Không có múa lửa, quán bar mở cửa suốt đêm như những hòn đảo thuộc Thái Lan, cách đó vẻn vẹn 45 phút đi tàu thủy.

Khách du lịch (trừ khách Âu và các nước không theo văn hóa Hồi giáo ) đến đảo ít tắm biển. Thường chỉ là một vài phụ nữ đạo hồi mặc nguyên bộ hijab, diện nguyên khăn trùm đầu, ùa xuống biển vui đùa. Họ chỉ mặc bikini ở bên trong trang phục truyền thống.

Trong những tour du lịch đắt khách không ưu tiên cho việc tắm biển ấy, tôi được tham quan những hòn đảo đẹp nhất của Langkawi, nhưng bãi tắm thì khá thất vọng. Họ tập trung xây những cây cầu đi bộ để khách du lịch dạo ngắm biển, làm các con đường vòng quanh hang đá. Giữa đảo, bước qua rất nhiều bậc thang như leo lên núi, rồi bước xuống, tôi bắt gặp một hồ xanh trong nằm trọn ở giữa.

Langkawi rộng gần 500 km2, một hòn đảo khá lớn, nhưng không có phương tiện giao thông công cộng. Muốn di chuyển, du khách có thể thuê siêu xe, ô tô tự lái, xe máy.. hoặc đi taxi. Taxi ở Langkawi có giá cố định cho các chặng, ví dụ từ sân bay về bãi biển Pantai Tennang tôi mua một tấm vé ở quầy thông tin, và cứ thế lên taxi. Kuah, ở phía góc đông nam của đảo, là khu phố chính và cũng là nơi đến của những chuyến phà, là nơi tập trung buôn bán của những thương nhân gốc Hoa, và là trung tâm hành chính, kinh tế của toàn đảo.

Ngày cuối cùng ở Langkawi, tôi đứng xếp hàng mua vé tàu cao tốc, từ vùng biển này, tôi tiếp tục hành trình của mình đến những bãi biển khác, hòn đảo khác, ở một đất nước khác, dài và xa hơn có tên Thái Lan.

Di chuyển: Từ Việt Nam, có rất nhiều hãng hàng không có chuyến bay thẳng đến Malaysia như Vietnam Airlines, Air Asia, Malaysia Airlines... Từ thủ đô Kuala Lumpur bạn có thể đi xe khách đến Melaka ( 150km ), rồi từ Melaka có thể bay đến các đảo Penang, Langkawi.

Hoặc bạn có thể quay ngược trở lại thủ đô, bay tiếp đi Penang, Langkawi, hoặc cũng có thể sử dụng xe khách cao cấp để tiết kiệm chi phí. Từ Sài Gòn, hiện nay đã có đường bay thẳng tới Joho Baru, thành phố lớn nhất phía nam Malaysia.

Thời tiết: Vì gần với đường xích đạo nên thời tiết ở đây khá nóng, nhiệt độ trung bình từ 20-30oC. Tuy nhiên, giống với hầu hết các nước Đông Nam Á, thường ít có ánh nắng mặt trời vào mùa gió mùa từ tháng 11 đến tháng 2 hàng năm, phía tây Malaysia không bị ảnh hưởng bởi mưa bão như phía đông nên bạn có thể du lịch quanh năm, mưa nhanh tạnh.
