Nói đến kế toán, kiểm toán, dường như chúng ta đều nghĩ đến các chuẩn mực rắc rối, các bút toán Nợ/Có khô khan hay các báo cáo tài chính không dễ hiểu một chút nào. Kế toán, kiểm toán được coi là một nghề khô khan, và có vẻ không phù hợp với những ai có tư duy và thích sự sáng tạo. Vậy "Creative Accounting - Kế toán sáng tạo" là gì? tại sao có Kế toán sáng tạo? Thực ra khái niệm này đã tồn tại từ rất rất lâu, và là đại dương vô tận cho những người hành nghề Kế toán, kiểm toán chuyên nghiệp muốn khám phá nó một cách thực sự.

Creative Accounting là việc vận dụng một cách linh hoạt và sáng tạo các kỹ thuật trong kế toán, hay còn gọi là các "thủ thuật", để "biến tấu" thông tin trên báo cáo tài chính nhằm tác động đến nhận thức của người đọc BCTC. Một trong những bình luận nổi tiếng của tờ New York Times về sự kiện gian lận kế toán của Lehman Brothers "Các chuyên gia kế toán hãy ngừng sáng tạo, và dành sự sáng tạo đó cho Apple".
