Đoạn sông từ cầu Bình Phước đến cầu Sài Gòn có chiều dài khoảng 22km, có nhiều khúc uốn, lòng sông khá hẹp với chiều rộng thay đổi từ 220m 230m. Kết quả khảo sát cho thấy đoạn sông này có gần 04km đường bờ bị sạt lở với mức độ khác nhau nằm trên địa bàn quận Thủ Đức, quận 2, quận 12 và khu vực bán đảo Thanh Đa - Bình Thạnh. Tổng hợp các vụ sạt lở trong những năm qua cho thấy hầu hết những đoạn sông bị sạt lở đều nằm trên các khúc cong sông điển hình như:
- Tháng 11/2000, cách cầu Bình Phước 1,5km về phía thượng lưu, một dãy nhà thuộc nhà Vọng Nguyệt của nhà hàng Thanh Cảnh đã bị sạt xuống sông với chiều dài 250m, chiều rộng khoảng 15m. Hiện nay, đoạn đường bờ này vẫn còn có nguy cơ sạt lở bất cứ lúc nào.

- Đoạn đường bờ ở khu vực nhà thờ Fantima, cách cầu Bình Lợi khoảng 350m về phía thượng lưu với chiều dài khoảng 300m đã bị sạt lở cách đây 07 năm và đã được xây dựng công trình kè bảo vệ bờ khá kiên cố.
