Theo báo cáo của Liên Hợp Quốc thì có khoảng 39.1 triệu người sống chung với HIV trên toàn thế giới trong đến năm 2006. Trong đó có 32.2 triệu người là phụ nữ và 17.7 triệu người là trẻ em dưới 15 tuổi. Hiện nay thì con số này đã giảm xuống còn 36.1 triệu người theo báo cáo của Liên Hợp Quốc hay UNAIDS vào cuối năm 2015. Số người mới nhiễm HIV giảm xuống rõ rệt từ 4.3 triệu người (năm 2006) còn 2.1 triệu người (cuối năm 2015). Số người chết vì nhiễm HIV cũng giảm xuống còn 1.1 triệu người so với 2.9 triệu người trong năm 2006.
Dựa trên chi chép thì có khoảng 78 triệu người mắc phải HIV kể từ ngày phát hiện ra loại virus này và 35 triệu người chết vì căn bệnh quái ác này.
