Tôi chưa từng thấy một vườn tháp chùa nào ở Việt Nam đẹp và lớn như ở chùa Bổ Đà. Gần 100 ngôi tháp bằng gạch nung xếp hàng, xếp lớp theo những quy định chặt chẽ của Thiền tông.

Bắc Giang và Bắc Ninh là những vùng đất văn hóa lâu đời của người Việt với hệ thống đình, chùa, đền cổ xưa nhất của nền văn minh châu thổ sông Hồng. Chùa Bổ Đà (hay gọi như người địa phương là chùa Bổ) xưa có tên là Quan Âm tự nằm trên lưng chừng núi Bổ Đà ở bờ Bắc sông Cầu, thuộc xã Tiên Sơn, huyện Việt Yên, tỉnh Bắc Giang.

Phải đi tới vùng đất này lần thứ hai, tôi mới thăm được ngôi chùa cổ kính đã nghe danh từ lâu. Con đường ngoằn nghèo qua những xóm làng nằm giữa những ruộng lúa dẫn tới chân một quả đồi phủ đầy cây xanh. Ngôi chùa có lối kiến trúc nội thông ngoại bế, với gần 100 gian liên hoàn, mang một vẻ u tịch, thanh vắng hiếm thấy, kể cả so với những ngôi chùa cổ khác ở miền Bắc.

Trên diện tích hơn 50.000 m², quần thể chùa Bổ là tập hợp di tích gồm chùa chính (Tứ Ân Tự) cùng hai đền thờ Đức Thánh Hóa và Thạch Tướng Đại Vương. Khuôn viên gồm ba khu: nội tự, vườn tháp và vườn cây ăn trái. Không nhiều chùa có được một khuôn viên rộng lớn, lại trải dài trên triền đồi như vậy.

Chỉ các tăng ni thuộc dòng Thiền Lâm tế được tàng lưu xá lị tro cốt tại đây. Tháp có bông sen trên ngọn là nơi lưu tro cốt của ni, tháp có bình cam lồ lưu tro cốt của tăng. Chùa Bổ Đà là một trong những trung tâm lớn của dòng thiền Lâm Tế nên hàng năm có rất đông tăng ni từ nhiều nơi về tham thiền.

Tại chùa còn có rất nhiều tài liệu, hiện vật quý hiếm, ngoài hệ thống tượng Phật theo thiền phái Trúc Lâm còn có văn khắc, thư tịch cổ, đại tự, câu đối, hương án (tòa Cửu Long), hai cây đèn gỗ thời Lê, chuông đồng niên hiệu Tự Đức, mõ cá dài trên mái…, đặc biệt bộ kinh Phật cổ nhất Việt Nam (khoảng 300 năm) được khắc trên 2.000 tấm gỗ thị vẫn còn khá nguyên vẹn, hiện được lưu giữ tại chùa.

Chùa Bổ Đà có từ thời Lý thế kỷ 11, và được trùng tu vào đời Lê, dưới triều vua Lê Dụ Tông (1705-1728). Cùng với chùa Vĩnh Nghiêm (Đức la), chùa Bổ Đà là một trung tâm Phật giáo lớn của Bắc Giang, thuộc thiền phái Trúc Lâm. Nơi đây có tượng thờ Trúc Lâm tam tổ (Trần Nhân Tông, Pháp Loa và Huyền Quang).

Xưa kia, Hương Tích và Bổ Đà là hai đạo tràng thờ Quán Thế Âm lớn nhất gần kinh thành Thăng Long. Bổ Đà là tên viết tắt của Bổ Đà Lạc Gia, đọc trại từ tiếng Phạn “Potalaka”, có nghĩa là ngọn núi nơi Bồ Tát Quán Thế Âm hóa hiện để cứu độ chúng sinh.
