Đoàn nghiên cứu đưa ra thuật ngữ mới, tạm dịch là “khuynh hướng vùng miền” (regionalism), để
chỉ thực tế sinh viên theo học trường đại học gần nhà mình nhất, rồi giảng dạy tại trường đó sau
khi tốt nghiệp, học tiếp chương trình sau đại học cũng tại trường đó, và nếu làm kinh doanh,
cũng tuyển nhân viên tốt nghiệp từ chính trường của mình. Hiện tượng này có thể bắt nguồn từ
văn hóa gia đình và dòng họ lâu đời. Trong quá trình phỏng vấn, một số sinh viên nói rằng họ
dựa vào sự hỗ trợ của gia đình, cả về mặt tài chính và tình cảm, trong khi số khác nói rõ rằng họ
còn có trách nhiệm với gia đình, do vậy không muốn đi học quá xa nhà. Đi du học là ước mơ của
rất nhiều người, tuy nhiên chỉ một số ít được hỏi cho biết muốn giảng dạy tại một trường đại học
khác hay chuyển tới một vùng khác ở Việt Nam. Sinh viên giỏi thường hay từ vùng sâu, vùng xa
tới những thành phố lớn để học tập, tuy nhiên, hiếm có chuyện sinh viên giỏi từ Hà Nội vào Cần
Thơ hoặc từ TP.HCM về Thái Nguyên để học
