Việt Nam, sau hai thập kỷ tăng trưởng kinh tế nhanh, giờ đây được coi là một câu chuyện thành công về phát triển. Công cuộc đổi mới về chính trị và kinh tế (công cuộc Đổi mới) được khởi xướng vào năm 1986 đã đưa Việt Nam từ một trong những nước nghèo nhất trên thế giới trở thành nước có mức thu nhập trung bình chỉ trong vòng một phần tư thế kỷ. Sự tăng trưởng ngoạn mục đó, kèm theo kết quả thu nhập bình quân đầu người tăng từ mức dưới 100 USD lên khoảng 1.596 USD vào năm 2012, đã diễn ra đồng thời với tỷ lệ nghèo giảm mạnh từ 58% xuống 14% trong giai đoạn 1993 - 2008 và ước tính còn khoảng 11,8% vào năm 2011. Mặc dù Việt Nam đã hoàn thành một số Mục tiêu Phát triển Thiên niên kỷ trước thời hạn 2015 và cải thiện hầu hết chỉ số phát triển, song có những thách thức mới đang nảy sinh khi Việt Nam bước vào giai đoạn phát triển mới.
