Trong gần 20 năm tiến hành công cuộc Đổi mới, Việt Nam đã đạt được những thành tựu khá thuyết phục về kinh tế và xã hội. Tốc độ tăng trưởng kinh tế đạt trung bình 7,3% giai đoạn 1990-2004, GDP thực bình quân đầu người tăng trung bình 5,7% hàng năm và tỷ lệ nghèo giảm từ gần 80% năm 1986 xuống còn 24% vào năm 2004. Trong hơn một thập kỷ qua, Việt Nam luôn được xếp vào nhóm nước có tốc độ tăng trưởng cao, đồng thời có thành tích giảm nghèo nhanh trên thế giới. Thành tựu trên đây là dấu hiệu tốt của quá trình chuyển đổi kinh tế và là kết quả của các chính sách mà Việt Nam đã và đang thực hiện trước những thay đổi nhanh chóng của nền kinh tế thế giới, đặc biệt là xu thế toàn cấu hóa. Ngay từ cuối thập kỷ 80, Việt Nam đã thực hiện chủ trương hội nhập kinh tế, bắt đầu bằng việc thông qua Luật Đầu tư Nước ngoài vào năm 1987, tiến hành ký kết các hiệp định thương mại song phương và đa phương, gần đây nhất là Hiệp định thương mại Việt-Mỹ. Việt Nam đã trở thành thành viên của ASEAN từ năm 1995, của APEC từ năm 1998, tham gia Diễn đàn kinh tế Á-Âu (ASEM) vào năm 2001 và đang chuẩn bị để gia nhập WTO.
