Sau hai thập kỉ chuyển đổi cơ cấu kinh tế, Việt Nam đã tiến một bước dài trên con đường phát triển và hội nhập kinh tế quốc tế. Kinh tế học vĩ mô là một môn kinh tế cơ sở, đề cập đến cơ sở lý thuyết và các phương pháp phân tích sự vận động của nền kinh tế tổng thể, làm nền tảng cho các phân tích chuyên ngành kinh tế khác.
Như đã biết, nền kinh tê quốc dân có bao gồm nhiều thị trường có liên quan mật thiết với nhau. Mỗi biến động trong một thị trường đều có tác động cân bằng trong các thị trường khác và cân bằng của cả nền kinh tế, kinh tế học vĩ mô sẽ quan tâm đến những mối quan hệ này nhằm phát hiện, phân tích và mô tả bản chất của biến đổi kinh tế, tìm ra những nguyên nhân gây nên sự mất ổn định, ảnh hưởng đến hiệu quả hoạt động chung của toàn bộ nền kinh tế.
