Lí thuyết giao dịch hồi ứng đặt vấn đề về mối quan hệ giữa bạn đọc và văn bản trong quá trình kiến tạo ý nghĩa tác phẩm. Tinh thần nổi bật của lí thuyết này: Tác phẩm văn học là kết quả của quá trình giao dịch hồi ứng giữa văn bản của nhà văn và sự trải nghiệm, cảm xúc, quan điểm, những quan tâm,… của người đọc trong môi trường, ngữ cảnh đọc cụ thể. Vận dụng lí thuyết này vào dạy học Ngữ văn ở nước ta phù hợp với xu hướng chung trong đổi mới phương pháp dạy học văn hiện nay, đáp ứng mục tiêu đặc thù của môn học này.
