ở trường tiểu học, tất cả học sinh trong 1 cấp lớp cụ thể học chương trình giống nhau. ở trường trung học, học sinh có sự lựa chọn giới hạn các môn học. Ở trường trung học thì sự lựa chọn rộng rãi hơn, mặc dù một số môn học là bắt buộc đối với mọi người nhưng một số học sinh trung học còn học các lớp học hướng nghiệp và những học sinh khác thì học các môn học sẽ giúp họ chuẩn bị vào trường đại học. Học sinh của cả 2 nhóm đều học cùng 1 trường, mỗi học sinh chọn các lớp theo nhu cầu và sở thích của mình. Học sinh trung học thường học 4 đến 5 môn cơ bản của học kì, mỗi môn học khoảng 1 tiếng mỗi ngày. Các môn học bổ sung như giáo dục thể chất, nghệ thuật hay âm nhạc có thể học 2 tiếng 1 tuần.
