Trẻ em Việt Nam từ 5 đến 17 tuổi bắt buộc phải đến trường. Hệ thống giáo dục ở Việt Nam được chia thành ba cấp học: cấp tiểu học gồm 5 năm bắt đầu từ 5 đến 10 tuổi, cấp phổ thông cơ sở thì gồm 4 năm và từ 11 đến 14 tuổi còn cấp phổ thông trung học gồm 3 năm từ 15 đến 17 tuổi. Mỗi năm học có 9 tháng, từ giữa tháng 8 đến cuối tháng 5, gồm học kì: học kì 1 từ giữa tháng 8 đến cuối tháng 12, học kì 2 từ đầu tháng 1 đến cuối tháng 5.Đồng thời phải tham dự kì thi tốt nghiệp vào tháng 6. Những môn thi bắt buộc trong kì thi tốt nghiệp quốc gia gồm 3 môn toán, ngữ văn và anh văn
