Đạo đức kinh doanh là một khái niệm không cũ mà cũng không mới. Với tư cách là một khía cạnh luân lý trong hoạt động thương mại, đạo đức kinh doanh đã lâu đời như chính thương mại vậy. Trong bộ luật Hammorabi từ khoảng 1700 TCN, đã có quy định về giá cả, thuế quan, cách thức hoạt động thương mại và cả hình phạt hà khắc cho những kẻ không tuân thủ. Đó có thể được coi là bằng chứng cho sự nỗ lực đầu tiên của xã hội loài người để nhân định ranh giới đạo đức cho các hoạt động kinh doanh. Trong tác phẩm “Politics” (ra đời vào khoảng năm 300 TCN), Aristoteles đã chỉ ra rõ ràng những mối liên hệ thương mại khi bàn về quản lý gia đình.
