Tết của người H’mong vào khoảng cuối tháng 11. Đầu tháng 12 âm lịch ngày 25, 26 tháng Chạp, người H’mong bắt đầu nghỉ ngơi chuẩn bị đón Tết. Trước đây người H’mong không gói bánh chưng. Bây giờ thì có gói, nhưng bánh chưng không nhất thiết có trong bữa cỗ Tết của họ. Với họ, ba món không thể thiếu là thịt và rượu và bánh ngô. Người H’mong không đón giao thừa tối hoặc nửa đêm 30, người ta cúng ma nhà (tổ tiên).Từ mùng 1 trở đi họ mặc quần áo mới, đi hài, đi chơi. Ném papao là một trong những trò chơi ngày Tết mà người H’mong rất thích. Ngoài ra còn múa khèn, múa ô, chơi cầu lông gà, hát ống, hát dân ca, đua ngựa, bắn nỏ...Đặc biệt, nói đến Tết của người H’mong không thể không nói đến một lễ hội gọi là hội Sải Sán hay Gầu tào (hội cầu phúc). Hội có thể kéo dài 3 ngày nếu 1 năm tổ chức một lần hoặc 9 ngày nếu 3 năm tổ chức một lần. Đây là lễ hội lớn nhất của người H’mong trong năm và nó thể hiện rõ nhất những đặc trưng văn hoá H’mong trong ngày Tết.
