Để thực sự ngăn chặn việc phát tán khí nhà kính, chúng ta cần phải phát triển nguồn năng lượng sạch. Năng lượng nước, năng lượng mặt trời, năng lượng Hidro... có thể giảm lượng khí nhà kính rất nhiều nếu chúng được đưa vào sử dụng rộng rãi.

Ở tầm cỡ quốc tế, hiệp định thư Kyoto được đưa ra để các nước cam kết giảm lượng CO2 và những loại khí nhà kính khác vào khí quyển. 35 nước công nghiệp đã kí và thực hiện tốt hiệp định thư này. Không may, Hoa Kỳ - một trong những nước sản xuất lượng khí nhà kính lớn nhất – lại không kí hiệp định này.

Tháng 3 năm 2007, cựu phó Tổng thống Mỹ Al Gore đã kêu gọi Quốc hội thực hiện một số thay đổi mang tính thách thức trong chính sách quốc gia.
