Tính đến cuối năm 2015, Việt Nam đã ký kết 11 Hiệp định Thương mại tự do (FTAs) đa phương và song phương với các khu vực và quốc gia

02 FTAs đã được ký kết, bao gồm: Hiệp định Thương mại tự do Việt Nam-Liên minh Kinh tế Á Âu và Hiệp định Thương mại tự do Việt Nam-Hàn Quốc. 02 FTAs đã kết thúc đàm phán Hiệp định Đối tác xuyên Thái Bình Dương (TPP) và Hiệp định Thương mại tự do Việt Nam-EU.

Ngày 31/12/2015, chúng ta cũng cùng các nước trong khối ASEAN chính thức xác lập Cộng đồng Kinh tế ASEAN (AEC).

AEC là khu vực có dân số 600 triệu người, tổng sản lượng (GDP) hằng năm khoảng 2.000 tỉ USD và là nền kinh tế đứng thứ 7 thế giới.
Sản xuất thép thô của các nước AEC khoảng 22 triệu tấn và nhu cầu tiêu thụ hàng năm khoảng 68 triệu tấn thép.AEC là thị trường xuất khẩu chính của Việt Nam trong 5 năm trở lại đây. Năm 2015, Việt Nam xuất siêu sang các nước AEC khoảng hơn 1,2 tỷ USD. Năm 2016, khi Formosa Hà Tĩnh đi vào sản xuất, ngành thép Việt Nam trở thành quốc gia sản xuất thép lớn nhất trong khu vực.

Hơn1,78 triệu tấn là lượng phôi thép ước nhập khẩu vào Việt Nam năm 2015, tăng 198% so với cùng kỳ 2014.
Hơn1,62 triệu tấn thép cuộn và dây thép ước được nhập khẩu vào VN trong khi sản xuất thép cuộn trong nước chỉ đạt 1,13 triệu tấn.
Gần1,43 triệu tấn tôn mạ kim loại & sơn phủ màu được nhập khẩu, tăng 87,55% so với cùng kỳ 2014.
2015 là năm của Phòng vệ Thương mại đối với ngành thép

Tổng số vụ hàng hóa xuất khẩu của Việt Nam bị khởi kiện: 12 vụ điều tra chống bán phá giá (AD), có 6 vụ về sản phẩm thép (03 vụ do Malaysia và 03 vụ do Thái Lan khởi xướng).

Việt Nam đã khởi kiện hàng hóa nhập khẩu từ nước ngoài vào Việt Nam, bao gồm: 02 vụ Tự vệ thương mại (01 vụ là thép). Và Cục đã tiếp nhận 01 vụ điều tra chống bán phá giá đối với sản phẩm thép.

Tình hình ngành công nghiệp thép năm 2015

Thị trường thép thế giới tiếp tục trầm lắng, có nhiều biến động và chưa có dấu hiệu phục hồi.
Giá của các loại nguyên liệu, bán thành phẩm cho sản xuất thép trên thị trường thế giới năm 2015 tiếp tục chiều hướng giảm trong cả năm.

Sản xuất các sản phẩm thép của Việt Nam năm 2015 đạt 14.988.000 tấn, tăng 21,54% so với năm 2014.

Tiêu thụ thép biểu kiến của Việt Nam năm 2015 (Sản xuất trong nước + Nhập khẩu – Xuất khẩu) đạt 17.889.000 tấn, tăng 26,38% so với năm 2014.
Nhập khẩu thép thành phẩm năm 2015 đạt 13,559 triệu tấn, tăng 20,49% so với cùng kỳ 2014.
Lượng thép thành phẩm và bán thành phẩm năm 2015 Việt Nam xuất khẩu ước đạt 2,835 triệu tấn, tăng 2,9% so với cùng kỳ 2015.
Triển vọng Công nghiệp thép năm 2016

Năm 2016 kinh tế thế giới tiếp tục phục hồi nhưng với tốc độ chậm hơn dự báo (khoảng 3,3% so với dự báo trước đây là 3,6%). Các chuyên gia quốc tế tin rằng Việt Nam sẽ là một trong những nền kinh tế phát triển vượt trội ở Châu Á trong giai đoạn 2016-2017.
Với những cơ hội và thách thức đan xen, năm 2016 ngành công nghiệp thép Việt Nam sẽ tiếp tục tăng trưởng. Dự báo toàn ngành năm 2016 sẽ tăng trưởng ~15% so với năm 2015. Số liệu cụ thể như sau: Phôi thép: 10%; Thép xây dựng: 15%; Thép lá cuộn cán nguội:13%; Thép ống hàn: 18%; Tôn mạ và sơn phủ màu: 15%.
