Sáng ngày 13 tháng 10, tại thành phố Tam Kỳ, tỉnh Quảng Nam, Hội Chữ thập đỏ Việt Nam (Vietnam Red Cross Society) phối hợp với Hiệp Hội Chữ thập đỏ và Trăng lưỡi liềm đỏ quốc tế (International Red Society), Ban chỉ đạo Trung ương về Phòng chống thiên tai (National Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevent), tổ chức Lễ mít tinh hưởng ứng Ngày quốc tế phòng chống và giảm nhẹ thiên tai (International Day for Disaster Reduction)
Theo Báo cáo thảm họa thế giới năm 2016, năm qua, có tới 98,6 triệu người bị ảnh hưởng bởi thiên tai, thảm họa trên toàn cầu. Đây cũng là năm được ghi nhận kể từ năm 1880 đến nay.
Việt Nam là một trong năm nước chịu ảnh hưởng nặng nề nhất bởi thiên tai và biến đổi khí hậu toàn cầu. Mỗi năm, Việt Nam phải hứng chịu từ 10 đến 15 cơn bão và lũ, lụt, gây thiệt hại nghiêm trọng cho 50% diện tích đất đai
Chủ đề của Ngày quốc tế giảm nhẹ thiên tai năm 2016 là "Sống để chia sẻ”, nhằm kêu gọi mỗi cá nhân cùng chia sẻ những bài học, kinh nghiệm trong việc ứng phó với thiên tai và biến đổi khí hậu.
Dịp này, ban tổ chức đã chọn phường Hòa Hương, thành phố Tam Kỳ để tổ chức Hội nghị về chủ đề này
