Chủ yếu công việc phiên dịch hiện nay do các sinh viên ngoại ngữ mới ra trường ít năm đảm nhiệm. Còn công tác biên dịch kể cả dịch các tác phẩm văn học, được một số lượng đông đảo những người biết ngoại ngữ thực hiện. Công sức của họ thật là to lớn, lượng sản phẩm họ tạo ra thật khổng lồ. Dầu vậy, nhìn tổng thể, có thể nói công tác dịch thuật, cả phiên dịch (dịch nói) và biên dịch (dịch viết) ở nước ta cho đến nay vẫn chưa trở thành một nghề mang tính chuyên nghiệp.
Việc thiếu chuyên nghiệp hoá đã dẫn tới nhiều hậu quả đáng buồn, thậm chí nghiêm trọng.
