Nhìn chung công tác thống kê, kiểm kê đất đai được thực hiện theo quy định của Luật Đất đai, phục vụ cho việc đánh giá và hoàn thiện chính sách pháp luật về đất đai, lập quy hoạch, kế hoạch sử dụng đất các cấp, góp phần xây dựng quy hoạch, kế hoạch phát triển kinh tế - xã hội.
Đến nay đã có 23/63 tỉnh, thành phố trực thuộc Trung ương đã thành lập Văn phòng đăng ký đất đai và đi vào hoạt động (gồm: Đà Nẵng, Hà Nội, Hải Phòng, TP. Hồ Chí Minh và các tỉnh Đồng Nai, Vĩnh Phúc, Quảng Ngãi, Thái Bình, Bắc Ninh, Tây Ninh, Vĩnh Long, Lào Cai, Lâm Đồng, Bình Dương, Gia Lai, Bình Thuận, Khánh Hoà, Tiền Giang, Cao Bằng, Bình Phước, Hưng Yên và Trà Vinh, Long An); 40 tỉnh đã lập Đề án, đang trình phê duyệt.
Thực hiện Luật Đất đai năm 2013, cả nước đã có 62/63 Tổ chức phát triển quỹ đất cấp tỉnh được thành lập (tỉnh Lào Cai chưa thành lập). Đối với cấp huyện, cả nước có 338/696 huyện, thị xã, quận, thành phố thuộc tỉnh đã thành lập Tổ chức phát triển quỹ đất cấp huyện. Thực hiện quy định của Luật Đất đai năm 2013 và Nghị định số 43/2014/NĐ-CP ngày 15/5/2014 của Chính phủ quy định chi tiết thi hành một số điều của Luật Đất đai, tính đến hết tháng 6 năm 2015, hầu hết các địa phương mới chỉ xây dựng đề án thành lập Tổ chức phát triển quỹ đất theo mô hình một cấp.
