Theo xếp hạng của Tổ chức Thương mại Thế giới, thứ hạng của Việt Nam xét theo kim ngạch xuất khẩu, nhập khẩu hàng hóa trong năm 2002 lần lượt ở vị trí 48 và 43 trên toàn thế giới. Tuy nhiên, cho đến năm 2012, cũng theo nguồn số liệu của WTO thì thứ hạng xuất khẩu hàng hóa của nước ta đã được tăng 11 bậc và xếp ở vị trí thứ 37 trong số các nước, vùng lãnh thổ trên toàn thế giới, trong khi nhập khẩu của Việt Nam cũng được tăng 9 bậc và xếp ở vị trí thứ 34.
