Thời tiền sử khi con người bắt đầu biết cách làm ra ngọn lửa để giữ ấm và nấu thức ăn, hay việc phát minh ra bánh xe giúp loài người trong việc đi lại, hay phát minh ra dòng điện từ thiên nhiên giúp cho việc sản xuất, đây đều được gọi là công nghệ do con người tạo ra. Sự phát triển gần đây của công nghệ, bao gồm việc tạo ra máy in, điện thoại, internet đã giảm bớt rào cản vật chất cũng như địa lý và giúp con người tương tác thông tin với nhau một cách nhanh chóng trong môi trường toàn cầu.

Tuy nhiên, công nghệ không thuần túy được sinh ra nhằm mục đích hòa bình giúp ích cho đời sống con người.
