Xếp hạng khách sạn thường được sử dụng để phân loại chất lượng khách sạn. Cùng với sự phát triển của tiêu chuẩn Đánh giá khách sạn, các khái niệm mới, các định nghĩa liên quan nối tiếp ra đời. Từ mục đích ban đầu chỉ nhằm thông báo trước cho khách du lịch các đánh giá khách quan dựa trên chỉ tiêu cơ bản được kiểm chứng, thử thách; việc Xếp hạng khách sạn đã trở thành một yếu tố quan trọng, nhằm quảng bá, khẳng định tên tuổi của một khách sạn khi được đạt "chuẩn".

Đã có hàng loạt các đề án đánh giá được sử dụng bởi các tổ chức khác nhau trên khắp thế giới.
