Mark Twain (1835 - 1910) tên thật là Samuel Langhorne Clemens, sinh tại Florida, thuộc tiểu bang Missouri, Mỹ.

Sau khi tham gia quân đội miền Nam trong thời nội chiến Mỹ và trải qua nhiều nghề khác nhau, năm 1863, ông bắt đầu viết văn, dùng bút danh "Mark Twain", có nghĩa là "sâu hai sải", bắt nguồn từ kỉ niệm lái tàu trên sông Mississippi.
