Ngô Bảo Châu sinh ngày 28 tháng 6 năm 1972 tại Hà Nội. Thời niên thiếu, ông là học sinh Trường Tiểu học Thực nghiệm, Trường THCS Trưng Vương, và sau đó học tại Khối chuyên Toán thuộc Khoa Toán - Cơ - Tin học, Trường Đại học Tổng hợp Hà Nội (cũ), nay là Trường Trung học Phổ thông chuyên Khoa học Tự nhiên thuộc Trường Đại học Khoa học Tự nhiên, Đại học Quốc gia Hà Nội. Ông đã hai lần đoạt huy chương vàng Olympic Toán học Quốc tế tại Australia năm 1988 và Cộng hòa Liên bang Đức năm 1989, và cũng là người Việt Nam đầu tiên giành 2 huy chương vàng Olympic Toán học Quốc tế.
