Theo Đức Miêng, từ những năm năm 1970 trở lại đây không có làng quan họ nào hát bài này[2]. Nhạc sĩ quá cố Hồng Thao đã ghi âm 174 làn điệu mà không hề có làn điệu Bèo dạt mây trôi. Người sưu tầm ca khúc và giới thiệu qua Đài tiếng nói Việt Nam là nhạc sĩ Nguyễn Chính, với bản thu thanh đầu tiên là của cố nghệ sĩ Thương Huyền năm 1968. Tuy nhiên chính nhạc sĩ Nguyễn Chính cũng không nhớ là sưu tầm ở đâu.

Năm 1992 đến nay, Đài Tiếng nói Việt Nam lại giới thiệu bài này là dân ca Nghệ Tĩnh. Những năm gần đây, trong một số đĩa CD, băng Karaoke, băng từ tính có bài bài này được giới thiệu là dân ca Nghệ Tĩnh. Việc lầm lẫn trong việc giới thiệu có thể khó tránh khỏi. Tuy chưa có những nghiên cứu thỏa đáng cho phép kết luận xuất xứ xác đáng nhất của bài Bèo dạt mây trôi, tài liệu đã dẫn cũng bước đầu nhận định: căn cứ vào tính chất và đặc điểm âm nhạc vùng Thanh Nghệ Tĩnh, đồng thời căn cứ vào ngữ phương vùng Thanh Nghệ, chúng tôi cho rằng Bèo dạt mây trôi chưa phải là dân ca Nghệ Tĩnh[2].

Gần đây trên bìa đĩa của một số ca sĩ đề tác giả của bài hát là "dân ca đồng bằng Bắc bộ".
