Ở Việt Nam, việc xây dựng này đã được thực hiện từ năm 2004, sau Thông tư 29/2004 của Bộ TN&MT và được triển khai ở nhiều địa phương qua nhiều chương trình dự án. Đến nay, cả nước có 240/713 quận, huyện đã được đầu tư xây dựng cơ sở dữ liệu đất đai, trong đó, có 107 đơn vị đưa nó vào vận hành, khai thác, sử dụng; 59/107 đơn vị của 9 tỉnh đã vận hành theo mô hình tập trung liên thông theo 3 cấp: cấp xã – huyện – tỉnh.
