Học thuyết của Bass (1989-1990) về lãnh đạo cho rằng: có ba giả thuyết cơ sở để giải thích vì sao mọi người trở thành lãnh đạo. Hai lý giải đầu tiên giải thích sự phát triển khả năng lãnh đạo đối với một số ít người. Ba giả định đó là:
