Các bài luận thường là một bài tóm lược ngắn có tính thực tế cao, nhằm diễn tả, sàng lọc, chứng minh hay phân tích một đề tài nào đó. Các học sinh phải viết bài luận trong bất kì một chủ đề nào, ở bất kì cấp học nào, từ một bài kể về chuyến du lịch ở trường cấp II đến bài phân tích của một quá trình “nghiên cứu” nào đó quan trọng hơn ở bậc học cao hơn.
