Newfoundland (French: Terre-Neuve Talamh an Éisc: Irish,) is a large island off the East coast of North America and is the most populated part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada.The island of Newfoundland (originally called Terra Nova, which means "new land" in Latin and Italian) was John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto) Italian in 1497. Newfoundland and the surrounding small islands have a total area of 111,390 km2 (43,008 sq mi) [4]. The provincial capital, St. John's, is located in the southeastern part of the island. Cape Spear, just south of the provincial capital, is the easternmost point in North America. Newfoundland had a population of 466,172 people (2001). However, it is common to see the neighbouring island directly as New World, Twillingate, Fogo and Bell Island is a part of Newfoundland (distinguish from Labrador). By that measure, the population in 2001 was 485,066 people.Newfoundland has a dialect of English known as Newfoundland English and a dialect of French known as Newfoundland French. Here have been a dialect of Irish known as Newfoundland, as well as an English language, Beothuk. Today, it is assumed that 80% of the population of Newfoundland has announced or parents have Irish ancestry.
