Trong thời gian thuê, Client có nhiều trạng thái. Khi bắt đầu thời gian thuê, Client có trạng thái kết nối (bound). Tại T1, Client chuyển sang trạng thái gia hạn (renewal) và gửi unicast một DHCP Request đến DHCP Server để yêu cầu kéo dài thời gian cho thuê địa chỉ IP. Nếu DHCP trả lời bằng DHCP ACK, Client trở về trạng thái kết nối (bound). Ngược lại, Client sẽ thử gửi DHCP Request sau khoảng thời gian bằng một nửa thời gian còn lại cho đến trước thời điểm T2 60 giây. Nếu Client vẫn không nhận được DHCP ACK trước khi T2 đến, Client chuyển sang trạng thái kết nối lại (rebinding).
Trong trạng thái kết nối lại (rebinding), Client sẽ quảng bá một DHCP Request để gia hạn thời gian thuê địa chỉ IP. Nếu nhận được DHCP ACK, Client trở về trạng thái kết nối (bound). Ngược lại, Client sẽ thử gửi DHCP Request sau khoảng thời gian bằng một nửa thời gian còn lại cho đến khi LT hết hạn.
