Nước ta đang bước vào thời kỳ công nghiệp hóa – hiện đại hóa nhằm đưa Việt Nam trở thành nước công nghiệp văn minh, hiện đại. Ngành du lịch là một trong những ngành có đóng góp khá to lớn trong công cuộc cách mạng đó và được xem là ngành “kinh tế mũi nhọn” trong thời đại hiện nay.
Ở nhiều nước trên thế giới, ngành du lịch phát triển khá mạnh mẽ và từ rất lâu nhưng ở Việt Nam thì đây là một ngành khá trẻ, chưa phát triển mạnh nhưng lại có vị trí khá quan trọng trong nền kinh tế Việt Nam hiện nay. Chính vì thế Chính phủ đã có những chính sách khai thác hợp lý tạo điều kiện thuận lợi để thu hút nguồn vốn khổng lồ từ các nhà đầu tư nước ngoài. Nhờ nguồn vốn đầu tư từ nước ngoài nên nhiều khu du lịch được hình thành và phát triển ở Việt Nam, khách sạn cũng mọc lên ngày càng nhiều.
Một điều đáng mừng là Việt Nam đã gia nhập WTO – đây cũng là một cửa ngỏ quan trọng trong sự phát triển của ngành du lịch. Cùng với sự tăng trưởng kinh tế và tiến bộ xã hội ở các quốc gia trên thế giới, nhu cầu đi du lịch của con người ngày càng cao và phong phú hơn. Nếu trước đây, con người đi du lịch được xuất phát từ nhu cầu thực tế là muốn tìm hiểu về con người, về xã hội, về phong tục tập quán ở nơi họ đến thì ngày nay nhu cầu đó được nâng lên là sự hưởng thụ chất lượng dịch vụ, chất lượng phục vụ ở nơi họ đến.
