Lúc còn ở Việt Nam, tôi có niềm tin sắc đá là tiếng Anh của tôi rất ngon lành. Tôi rất tự hào vì là dân tỉnh lẻ, không tốn một đồng luyện thi nhưng vẫn được IELTS 7.5. Nhưng sau một tháng du học ở châu Âu, tôi mới tẽn tò nhận ra, tôi nói tiếng Anh rất tệ.
Lúc đầu, tôi thích nói tiếng Anh nhanh, vậy cho có phong thái của người giỏi tiếng Anh. Nhưng sau một tháng, tôi cay đắng thừa nhận, chỉ có bạn Scotland là hiểu tôi nói gì. Còn các bạn Đức, Pháp, Thụy Điển... thì chỉ gật đầu giả bộ hiểu!
Cả ngày hôm đó, tôi bàng hoàng nhận ra nhiều điều. Bạn Scotland từng qua Việt Nam 6 tháng nên đã quen với tiếng Anh kiểu Việt Nam. Đối với các bạn khác, tôi nói tiếng Anh như nói ngọng.
Chuyện số 1: Thầy hướng dẫn và tôi thảo luận cách bố trí thí nghiệm. Nhưng tôi nói mãi chữ “food” mà thầy không hiểu tôi nói cái chi. Tối hôm đó, tôi lủi thủi lên youtube coi người bản xứ nói chữ “food” thế nào.
Sau 30 phút vật vã, tôi mới bần thần phát hiện, hơn 10 năm nay, tôi toàn phát âm bậy chữ “food”. Nói chữ “food”, phải nói âm “u dài” mới đúng. Trong khi đó, tôi lại quen miệng nói thành “u ngắn”, như chữ “u” trong tiếng Việt. Đau lòng thay.
Chuyện số 2: Gần hết giờ học, nhưng tôi hậu đậu làm mất sheet trong Excel. Hết cả hồn, tôi mới nói với cô giáo “I can’t find my sheet”. Cô giáo sững sờ nhìn, tôi càng run hơn. Hít một hơi tôi mới lắp bắp “Can you help me find my sheet”.
30 giây im lặng trôi qua, không ai nói gì. Giây 31, cả lớp cười ầm lên. Nhờ công các bạn, tôi đau khổ nhận ra, tôi đã nói bậy chữ “sheet” thành “shit”! Sheet và Shit, quê độ thay. Những chuyện rùng rợn về lỗi phát âm vẫn còn nhiều, nhưng tôi chỉ kể 2 chuyện làm tôi xấu hổ nhất.
Nhưng thật may mắn, sau một học kỳ vật vã chỉnh phát âm, tôi đã tiến bộ. Với những người mới gặp lần đầu, tôi kể chuyện cười thì ai cũng hiểu rồi cùng pha trò theo. Điều này chứng tỏ tôi đã phát âm chính xác hơn, người ta nghe là hiểu liền.
Tổng kết lại, học tiếng Anh thì phải học phát âm. Học càng sớm càng tốt bởi vì càng lớn thì càng khó chỉnh. Ai không muốn vô trung tâm thì cứ mở youtube lên mà học. Có nhiều kênh hay như Coach Shane, Rachel’s English, tha hồ mà học miễn phí. Nếu bạn còn lười biếng, hãy gõ thử “vietnamese accent in english” trên youtube, coi người bản xứ họ nhái giọng người Việt Nam nói tiếng Anh. Coi để thấy quê, thấy mắc cỡ mà có động lực học.
