Ngày 24.11.2011, tại Hội nghị lần thứ 6 của Ủy ban liên chính phủ về Bảo tồn Di sản văn hóa phi vật thể diễn ra tại Bali - Indonesia, Tổ chức Giáo dục, Khoa học và Văn hóa UNESCO đã chính thức ghi danh Hát Xoan vào danh mục "Di sản văn hóa phi vật thể nhân loại cần được bảo vệ khẩn cấp".

Theo đánh giá của Hội đồng UNESCO, hát Xoan là loại hình nghệ thuật truyền thống độc đáo bởi tính cổ xưa, chứa đựng nhiều giá trị văn hoá và được cộng đồng gìn giữ qua nhiều thế kỷ, không bị biến mất trong đời sống hiện đại.

Hát Xoan ra đời từ rất sớm, với hình thức ban đầu là nghi lễ thờ vua, cầu mong vua giáng phúc, ban cho mưa thuận gió hoà, mùa màng tốt tươi, đem lại cuộc sống ấm no, hạnh phúc cho muôn dân trăm họ. Hát Xoan chứa đựng hai thông điệp về văn hoá, đó là tâm linh (thờ lễ, cầu chúc, khẩn nguyện) và vui hội (trữ tình, giao duyên).

Về mặt nghi lễ, hát Xoan là điệu hát tín ngưỡng thờ Quốc tổ Hùng Vương, cũng là biểu hiện cho tín ngưỡng thờ tổ tiên của người Việt. Lời ca hát Xoan nghi lễ thể hiện rất rõ đạo lý Vua - Tôi.

Ngoài phần nghi lễ, hát Xoan còn là tập hợp những điệu hát trữ tình giao duyên, vừa nôm na lại vừa sâu sắc. Trong lễ hội của làng Xoan, sau phần lễ đều có phần vui chơi mà người phường Xoan gọi là "hát chơi bời" (hát đúm, hát đố, hát đối đáp trai gái...) mang dáng dấp của các bài hát dân ca, ví giao duyên... Các làn điệu Xoan cổ đều bắt nguồn từ những làng cổ nằm ở vị trí có địa hình bán sơn địa thuộc địa bàn trung tâm của bộ Văn Lang (thời các vua Hùng dựng nước) - Đây là một trong những yếu tố quan trọng ảnh hưởng và tác động trực tiếp đến sự ra đời và tồn tại của các làn điệu và cách thể hiện của hát Xoan.
