- Tính trừu tượng: Trên tờ hối phiếu có ghi số tiền trả cho ai, thời gian, địa điểm phát sinh hối phiếu mà không ghi rõ nguyên nhân phát sinh hối phiếu, tức nội dung kinh tế của hối phiếu.
- Tính bắt buộc: Người trả tiền bắt buộc phải trả tiền hối phiếu mà không được từ chối vì bất cứ lý do gì. Tính bắt buộc của hối phiếu được pháp luật bảo đảm.
- Tính lưu thông: Hối phiếu có thể chuyển nhượng từ tay người này sang tay người khác thông qua thủ tục ký hậu hối phiếu trong thời gian hiệu lực của hối phiếu.
