Tại khu vực Darfur thuộc miền tây Sudan, cuộc xung đột sắc tộc diễn ra từ tháng 2 năm 2003 đến nay đã cướp đi sinh mạng của hơn 70.000 người và buộc khoảng 1,8 triệu người phải di dời. Căn nguyên của cuộc xung đột này rất phức tạp và nhiều phần của bức tranh vẫn còn chưa rõ ràng. Tuy nhiên, một số sự kiện quan trọng hiện đã được làm rõ. Thủ phạm chính của các vụ giết chóc và trục xuất là lực lượng dân quân gốc “Ả-rập” do chính phủ hậu thuẫn. Nạn nhân chủ yếu là những người da đen gốc Phi của ba bộ lạc.
