Hiện nay ĐHQGHN đang thực hiện giai đoạn II của lộ trình đào tạo theo tín chỉ, vì vậy các môn học cần giảm bớt số lượng để tránh dàn trải các kiến thức và người học có điều kiện nghiên cứu sâu sắc những kiến thức cốt lõi. Tổng số môn học sinh viên phải tích lũy (chưa tính các môn học giáo dục thể chất, giáo dục quốc phòng, kỹ năng mềm) từ 40 đến 47 môn học đối với chương trình đạo tạo chuẩn; từ 45 đến 52 môn học đối với chương trình đào tạo chất lượng cao và chương trình đào tạo đạt chuẩn quốc tế; từ 48 đến 55 môn học đối với chương trình đào tạo tài năng.
