Giai đoạn 2007 - 2009 được coi là giai đoạn bùng nổ ĐTNN tại Việt Nam Năm 2007, vốn đăng ký có bước tiến vượt bậc với 21,3 tỷ USD, tăng 77,8% so với năm 2006. Năm 2008 là năm thu hút đỉnh cao của đầu tư nước ngoài với vốn đăng ký đạt trên 71,7 tỷ USD, tăng hơn 3 lần so với năm 2007, đây là năm có số vốn FDI đăng ký cao nhất trong lịch sử thu hút ĐTNN vào Việt Nam.

Trong năm 2009 do tác động của cuộc khủng hoảng kinh tế thế giới dẫn tới điều chỉnh chính sách đầu tư của các tập đoàn đa quốc gia, dòng vốn đầu tư toàn cầu suy giảm, cạnh tranh thu hút ĐTNN càng trở nên gay gắt, ĐTNN vào Việt Nam đã suy giảm đáng kể, đạt 23,1 tỷ USD, tuy chỉ bằng 30% so với cùng kỳ năm 2008 nhưng cũng là một mức cam kết khá cao trong bối cảnh suy thoái kinh tế toàn cầu. Như vậy, chỉ tính từ năm 2007 đến năm 2009, Việt Nam đã thu hút được 3.993 dự án ĐTNN với vốn đăng ký đã đạt 116,4 tỷ USD, cao hơn gần 2,1 lần so với mục tiêu đề ra (55 tỷ USD) cho cả giai đoạn 5 năm 2006 - 2010.

Do ảnh hưởng của suy thoái kinh tế toàn cầu nên ĐTNN trong giai đoạn từ năm 2010 – 2012 có giảm nhẹ. Năm 2010 Việt Nam thu hút được 19,88 tỷ USD, năm 2011 là 15,6 tỷ USD, và năm 2012 là 16,34 tỷ USD vốn đăng ký đầu tư. Như vậy, tính chung cả giai đoạn 2010 đến 2012, Việt Nam đã thu hút được 3715 dự án ĐTNN với vốn đăng ký đạt 51,8 tỷ USD, bằng 72% so với vốn đăng ký của riêng năm 2008.

Trong 2 năm trở lại đây, vốn ĐTNN đã có sự khởi sắc trở lại. Năm 2013, Việt Nam đã thu hút được 1.530 dự án với vốn đăng ký đặt 22,3 tỷ USD, tăng 36% so với năm 2012. Trong 9 tháng năm 2014, các nhà đầu tư nước ngoài đã đăng ký đầu tư vào Việt Nam 11,18 tỷ USD.
