Nhiệt năng có thể truyền dưới 3 dạng cơ bản như sau:bằng dẫn nhiệt, trao đổi nhiệt đối lưu và bức xạ nhiệt. Tổ hợp của 3 dạng truyền nhiệt cơ bản trên được xem như là dạng truyền nhiệt phức tạp. Việc nghiên cứu trực tiếp quy luật truyền nhiệt tổ hợp là rất phức tạp vì vậy chúng ta nghiên cứu lần lượt từng phương thức truyền nhiệt cơ bản sau đó phối hợp lại để tìm ra cách tính toán truyền nhiệt phức tạp cho thiết bị trao đổi nhiệt
