Cây bông ở Việt Nam được trồng theo hai vụ:
Bông vụ mưa : gieo tháng 7 thu hoạch vào cuối tháng 11. Bông trồng theo mùa vụ mưa chiếm đa phần nhưng có nhiều kiểu trồng khác nhau. Bông có thể trồng riêng trong một vụ hoặc trồng ở vụ hai sau vụ cây trồng ngắn ngày như đậu xanh, đậu tương, ngô... và có thể trồng thuần hoặc xen canh với cây trồng khác.
Bông vụ khô: gieo vào tháng 11 và 12, thu hoạch tháng 3 và 4. Có hai loại: Bông trồng trên các thửa ruộng nhỏ với hệ thống tưới nước bằng hồ như ở Phú Yên, Quảng Nam, Quảng Ngãi.
Bông trồng trên diện tích lớn, tập trung được tưới bằng các công trình thủy lợi như ở Bình Thuận.
